Overview
Caffeine is a naturally occurring methylxanthine found in coffee, tea, cocoa, guarana and many sport products. Its main practical effect is central nervous system stimulation, with downstream effects on alertness, perceived effort, reaction time and exercise capacity. It should be treated as an acute performance tool, not a recovery substitute or a way to override chronic fatigue. The strongest sport-performance case is for acute use before endurance exercise, repeated high-intensity work and selected strength, power or team-sport tasks. The International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand reports that caffeine has been shown to enhance many, but not all, aspects of exercise performance, with the most consistent evidence in aerobic endurance. The Australian Institute of Sport classifies caffeine as a Group A performance supplement for specific sport situations using evidence-based protocols. The usual research range is not a universal prescription. Moderate intakes often perform as well as higher doses while causing fewer side effects. Habitual caffeine intake, genetics, anxiety sensitivity, sleep debt, gastrointestinal tolerance and the athlete's sport schedule can all change the risk-benefit balance. Evening or late-afternoon use may improve a session but worsen sleep, which can then reduce recovery and adaptation. For coaching use, caffeine is best considered when the goal is acute alertness or session output and when sleep timing, total daily intake and product quality are controlled. It is not a treatment for low energy, poor nutrition, iron deficiency, illness, overreaching or inadequate sleep. Athletes should trial caffeine away from competition before relying on it on race day or match day.
Common use
Evidence-supported use is mainly acute: improving alertness, vigilance, perceived effort and selected endurance, high-intensity, strength-power or team-sport outcomes. It should be used selectively around important sessions or competitions rather than as a daily workaround for poor recovery.
Common forms
Coffee, tea, caffeine tablets/capsules, caffeinated gum, gels, chews, energy drinks and pre-workout products. Multi-ingredient products need separate review because total caffeine, stimulants and contamination risk may be unclear.
Practical notes
When and how to take it: common sport protocols use caffeine before the target session, often around 30-60 minutes pre-exercise depending on the source. Gum or mouth-rinse strategies may act faster than capsules or coffee. Start low, trial during training, track sleep and anxiety, and avoid stacking multiple caffeine sources.
